I'll be honest, I was highly skeptical when I first started chatting with Ana Maria Vasquez from Intention Training. I was introduced to her at the yoga retreat I attended earlier this year and since then have followed her closely, while also keeping her teachings at a distance. A piece of me wanted to believe her, but the realist in me didn't. Today's podcast episode with her was enlightening...to say the least!

Ana Maria is a self-described multi-sensory animal and nature intuitive. What does this mean? Through various types of sensory energy, she is able to communicate with plants and animals. Pretty cool, right? It gets cooler...Ana Maria also believes that all of us are capable of these abilities, it's just a matter of tapping into the right frequency. How does she do this? Well you'll have to listen to the episode...

Beyond her ability to communicate with plants and animals, we discuss in-depth all about energy healing, why animals and nature are good for our health and what we can learn from our pets. Hint: Bodhi was very much in attendance.

Here are a few other things we discussed in today's episode.

  • Ana Maria's journey and how she discovered she was a plant and animal intuitive
  • How we can all energetically "tune-in" to the world around us
  • What communication means beyond verbal communication and how to pay attention to these signals
  • Grounding and the benefits of being outside
  • How to connect to other dimensions through energetic portals like nature and animals
  • What we can learn from our dreams and accessing other dimensions?
  • The law of attraction and how to boost your vibrations
  • How to tune in to what our animals are trying to teach us

Ooooooh meditation! I feel like it's something that everyone talks about but no one really knows what it means. That's probably because there's so many ways to define it and beyond that, so many different traditions of meditation that there really is no one size fits all. And in case you've guessed it, that's what today's episode is all about!

I'm honored and excited to welcome Ellie Burrows, the co-founder of MNDFL, a meditation studio in New York City to the show today. On today's episode we're exploring meditation, what it means to Ellie, the different types of meditation practices available and tips for new and experienced meditators to explore and deepen their practices.

As someone who has a love-hate relationship with meditation, I'm happy to say that this episode inspired me to rekindle my practice more consistently, and I even signed up for my first meditation class!

Since I know the new year is just around the corner, and lots of you are setting goals and resolutions, my hope with this episode is that it inspires you to develop a meditation practice or explore the possibility of it in 2018.

Here's a breakdown of some of the stuff we talked about:

  • Ellie's journey and how she got started on her spiritual path
  • How she met her co-founder, Lodro and launched MNDFL
  • The different types of meditation and how she recommends finding the one that works for you
  • Some of the health benefits of a meditation practice
  • What to do on those days when you can't seem to let go of your thoughts?
  • Is there a benefit to practicing in a group vs. practicing at home
  • Rituals that help keep you consistent and on track with your meditation practice
  • How to prioritize your health when there's a never-ending list of wellness items to check off
  • How do you meld meditation and spirituality with religion?

Happy (almost) Thanksgiving! I thought today's episode would be perfect for those of you traveling today or are on your way to a family function to tune in and bring a little sunshine to your life. Because that's what Alison Wu is, pure, radiant sunshine.

But beyond that, she's also an incredibly talented food, prop, and wardrobe stylist who specializes in healthy recipe development and making smoothies look out of this world good...that taste great too!

A lot of the episodes lately have been quite heavy or science-loaded, so I wanted a lighter episode that highlighted someone who brings positivity, creativity and art to the wellness space. Alison is one of those people who you just want to be friends with. And I not so secretly hope that bringing her on the podcast was the first step in becoming her friend!

Alison is just a ray of sunshine who delivers helpful tips in such a relatable way. Today's episode is no exception.

Here are some things we chatted about:

  • Alison's journey and how she found herself as a food stylist
  • Her biggest creative influences for recipe development and styling
  • Why she was a vegetarian and then started eating meat again
  • Tackling her food fears and eating intuitively
  • Adaptogens and using plants to help balance her hormones
  • Spirituality and her experience on an ashram learning yoga
  • Intentionality and the trendiness of crystals and alternative healing methods
  • Instagram algorithms and how to stay authentic online
  • The many layers of self-care and how to individualize this practice

Mentioned in this episode:

  • Sun Potion Transformational Foods (website)

I love every single podcast episode I've recorded, but there are certain ones I never want to come to an end. Today's conversation with Dr. Will Cole was one of them.

I invited Dr. Cole on to chat all things functional medicine, but what I got was so much more. We jumped into topics like hormone health, adrenal fatigue, our microbiome and the importance of FAT, among many other things. It was an enlightening and inspiring conversation, that unfortunately only last one hour. I wish we could have chatted all day!

Dr. Cole is an influential functional medicine doctor who has worked with many large publications so I'm thrilled he made the time to come onto the show.

Here are some things we discussed:

  • Dr. Cole's journey and how he decided to focus on functional medicine
  • What is functional medicine and how does it differ from mainstream western medicine?
  • Hormone health and how to treat it from a functional medicine perspective
  • Adrenal fatigue and what it really means
  • Food and lifestyle tips for someone struggling with adrenal fatigue
  • Brain health and the effects it has on your hormones and beyond
  • Inflammation in the brain and markers of inflammation
  • Tips for naturally treating your body during cold and flu season

A couple of years ago on a dark January day, I walked into a storefront on Kings Street in Toronto with little knowledge of how transformative the contents inside would be. It was called Body Thoughts and it was a traveling art show-experience focused on creating dialogue and expanding our knowledge of how we perceive our bodies. Run by two young women, each of whom had their own body image struggles and conversations to share, Body Thoughts ended up being one of my highlights of 2016 and an experience I haven't forgotten.

Fast-forward to today and one of the founders of Body Thoughts and the creative vision behind it, Alexa Mazzarello is on the podcast today to chat about that experience, her struggles with body image and how her perception of her body has changed since taking on photography full-time.

Alexa is an insanely talented photographer, body positive creative and a friend. It's been a year in the making bringing her on the show and I'm so happy to have her on board today!

Here are some things we discussed:

  • Alexa's journey and how she launched Body Thoughts
  • Losing her aunt and how that changed her perception of her body
  • The power of body positivity for men and why we must not exclude them from the conversation
  • How Body Thoughts helped shift her perspective when it comes to health
  • How she uses her photography to help women improve their body image
  • The power of photography as a form of therapy and self-improvement
  • How her perception of body diversity has changed since becoming a photographer
  • The one health habit she can't live without

WHEW! Coming up with a title for this episode was a real struggle. Why? Because on today's episode, I'm chatting with Lauren Geersten from Empowered Sustenance and Meo Energetics about everything! No really, everything.

Lauren is a wealth of knowledge and since starting the podcast I have wanted to bring her on the show. I had an hour of her time and I really tried to make the most of it so we covered a lot of ground. From her struggles with ulcerative colitis, her healing journey, mental health and chronic illness, energy medicine, and what it means to be an "empath", we're talking about it all.

At 24 years old, Lauren's journey is nothing short of inspirational. She is currently writing a book and I am eagerly waiting for it to come out. In the meantime, I have today's episode to listen to on repeat.

Here are just a few of the things we discussed:

  • Lauren's journey and how she launched Empowered Sustenance
  • Her struggles with ulcerative colitis and how she healed her body with food
  • The healing archetype and how to support your mental health with chronic illness
  • How to use food to heal your body with a history of an eating disorder
  • Health perfectionism and how to recover from it
  • Health as a journey, not as a destination
  • Energy medicine - what it is and how it can benefit your health
  • Living as an empath vs. being a highly sensitive person

Items mentioned in this episode:

  • Breaking the Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet (Amazon)
  • The Hero with a Thousand Faces (Amazon)
  • Lauren's energy medicine company, Meo Energetics

The dreaded quarter life crisis...have you ever had one? I most certainly did and I can assure you that this blog would never exist if I hadn't had one. Silver lining? In today's episode, we're welcoming Kali Rogers from Blush Life Coaching to talk about the quarter life crisis and how to navigate it if you feel like you're having one.

What I love about Kali is that she always keeps it real. This isn't some mumbo jumbo "go after your dreams" speech - it's real, effective strategies to navigate a very stressful period in your life. Usually these periods are just bumpy transitions, but it certainly helps to have someone holding your hand as you make your way to other side.

In this week's episode, we hear how Kali got started in the life coaching world and how to identify if you're having a quarter-life crisis. And even if you aren't, I think this episode will be helpful to anyone going through a transition phase. Because life certainly isn't stagnant so we all have that to relate to.

Here are just a few of the things we discussed:

  • Kali's journey and how she got started in life coaching
  • What is a quarter-life crisis and who can have one?
  • How to navigate those transitions when you don't know what direction to go in
  • Do we all need a side hustle and if so, should it be our career?
  • What is a life coach and do they actually help?
  • How to ignore what is happening around you and focus on your journey
  • The one health habit Kali can't live without

Welcome back to to Episode #33 of That's So Maven! After a 5 day trip to NYC, I'm so happy to be back home and continuing to interview some incredible humans making waves in the wellness community. Today's guest, Jessamyn Stanley is no exception.

From Jessamyn's bio: "Jessamyn Stanley is a yoga teacher, body positivity advocate, and writer based in Durham, North Carolina. Jessamyn uses high energy vinyasa flow as a way to move past mental and emotional barriers. Her classes provide a body positive approach to yoga which celebrates students' bodies and encourages them to ask 'How do I feel?' rather than 'How do I look?' when practicing yoga."

This perfectly sums up Jessamyn and exactly the message she is advocating for. It was such a pleasure to talk with her and breakdown the prejudice that exists in the yoga community and beyond.

Here are just a few of the things we discussed:

  • Jessamyn's journey and how she discovered yoga
  • Why she thinks there is a lack of body diversity in the yoga community
  • Body image and how she learned to accept her body
  • Is the word "fat" derogatory and if not, can we use it?
  • How we define health and if you can be healthy and fat
  • The prejudice that exists in the health and wellness commmunity
  • Advice for people who feel discriminated against for their body size

Thank you all so much for your kind words on last week's return of the podcast! It felt so nice to take a break and I'm feeling better than ever about the kick-off of this season. It certainly helps to have an epic lineup of guests, including this week's lady on the hot seat, Sahara Rose.

Now I'm not entirely sure how I feel about manifestation, but it seems to be that when I think and talk a lot about wanting to have a certain guest on the podcast, it comes to fruition. I'm kind of an Ayurveda geek, but I have so much more to learn. As a result, I knew I wanted to bring on an Ayurvedic expert to let me pick their brain on the show.

In this week's episode, we cover a lot of ground. But what I love most is how grounded Sahara is making her able to communicate what Ayurveda means within the context of our world. She's taking an ancient tradition and showing us how we can apply it to our everyday lives and that is something I can get down with.

Here are just a few of the things we discussed:

  • Sahara's own health journey and struggles with allergies and asthma as a kid
  • How she discovered Ayurveda through yoga
  • Why she decided to adopt Ayurvedic practices in her life
  • What is Ayurveda and how it started in Ancient India
  • What is a dosha and how do you figure out your dosha?
  • What does it mean to balance your dosha?
  • Can you integrate Ayurveda with Western medicine?

Items and people mentioned in the episode:

After a two-month break, the podcast is BACK and I could not be more excited! The time off really allowed me to catch my breath, journal, and reflect on my core values that I strive to incorporate into all of the content I continue to create for you. And I find it so fitting that many of these themes come up in this first episode back.

For those of you who have been following The Healthy Maven for awhile now, you know I am a HUGE fan of Barre3 and the company's founder, Sadie Lincoln. I love how Barre3 advocates for listening to your body and practicing intuitive movement -  a message that has really resonated with me as my relationship with exercise has evolved over the past several years. Sadie is someone I have admired both as a businesswomen and as a leading voice for intuitive living and body love, and I've been dying to have her on the show!

Here's what we chatted about:

  • Her unconventional upbringing as a "hippie" kid
  • How she fell into the fitness industry and discovered her love of group exercise
  • The role of intuition in shaping her career path as an entrepreneur
  • The importance of slowing down, and how this idea plays a role in both her professional and personal lives
  • Sadie's toolbox of self-care practices
  • Her thoughts on developing and modeling a healthy relationship with social media
  • Using the power of education to maintain Barre3's key messages across a franchise model
  • How she's navigated through the traditional fitness marketing cycle to find her authentic path
  • The one health habit she can't live without
  • Sadie's advice to her 20-year-old self

Today's episode is for anyone who has ever struggled with their skin, whether it's acne-prone or dry or just general health of the largest tissue in our body.

I’ve seen some great improvement in my hormonal acne is because of the skincare products I’m using. As someone with dry, sensitive skin that is also acne-prone, it’s been tough finding products that work for me. While I’ve found a few I love and continue to use, none of them even compare to my loyalty to Luminance Skincare.

From their masks, to their cleansers to their acne serum, I’m not only in love with their products, but have found they work wonders for my skin.

You'll hear about:

-Kim’s background as an engineer and how he found himself as a natural skincare expert

-What group of people have the best skin in the world and what he learned from them to produce his skincare products

-Regulations in skincare products in the United States

-Toxins to lookout for in conventional skincare

-Why it's so important to not use synthetic products on our body and on our skin

-Why the cosmetic market hasn't went organic or taken over the natural skincare space

-Why you should read skincare labels like you read food labels

-What to do if you see an ingredient you have a question about on a skincare product

-What is "green-washing" and what that means for the beauty industry

-How your skin works and why it's a barrier for toxins

-How he discovered, which plant-based oils work well for different skin types

-Anti-aging products and if they actually work

-Why “oil-free” products are not great for our skin

-What black heads and pimples really are

-What three products you should start with when switching your skincare routine

-How you can try Luminance Skincare’s products FOR FREE

-Products for acne-prone and sensitive skin

-What the growth of Luminance Skincare looks like

-The one health habit Kim can't live without

Today's episode is for anyone has tried changing their body by restricting their calories, eliminating whole macronutrients or other dangerous decisions that loop them into the diet-binge cycle that (I can assure you) will never end.

For example — you know the feeling, when you've just eaten a couple sweet treats or a bag of chips and suddenly you get hit by ravenous hunger and cravings for more. Our blood sugar doesn't always communicate with our hunger signals and even though we may have just eaten a ton, our blood sugar has not gotten the memo.
But not everyone has gone through this journey or understands our bodies reaction to carbs and how to regulate our blood sugar. Luckily for us, Kelly LeVeque from Be Well By Kelly is here to break it all down for you. She's a nutritionist, whose understanding of food and our bodies reaction to it is approachable and demystifying.

She uses plenty of analogies and examples to help her clients (and now you guys!) understand the science behind nutrition so that eventually these decisions can be intuitive for you too!

You’ll hear about:
-What made Kelly interested in health
-Kelly's own journey and her unconventional route to a career in nutrition
-How many streams of income a business person told Kelly she needed to have
-What getting a book deal for Body Love looked like
-What her day-to-day schedule looks like
-What type of clients Kelly LeVeque works with
-What Kelly is really trying to teach her clients to do
-Why extreme over-correcting on your diet backfires
-The science behind the different foods we nourish our bodies with
-Carbs, sugar and what can we ADD to our plates to stabilize our blood sugar
-How does insulin work and why it's important to understand it
-What to do when you "overdo" it
-Where you store carbs in your body
-Why we need to differentiate our stores of energy
-How to get over food anxiety and food guilt and find more balance in your meals
-Why calorie counting is archaic and not an effective weight-loss practice
-Ketones and why using fat as an energy source is beneficial for our bodies
-How to emotionally unconnect to one meal so you can stabilize your insulin
-Why you should focus on the quality of your food, NOT calorie count (there's a shopping analogy there!)
-Kelly's holy-grail foods
-Kelly's one piece of weight loss advice
-The one health habit Kelly can't live without
-Who she looks up to in business
-What she would tell their 20 year old self
-What she hopes her 50 year old self tells her
