Information on how your representatives have voted on the environment from the EWG (Environmental Working Group)

President's Cancer Panel - evidence that pesticides are leading to increased cancer diagnoses (from 2010)

I've talked about it many times before, but my trip to Sonoma earlier this year with Stonyfield Organic was truly life-changing. While I had a sense of the importance of organic food and the organic movement, I wasn't fully aware of the impact it actually had. To be honest, I hadn't interacted with the farmers, learned about how their practices differ and really the art that is organic food until this trip. Once Pandora's Box had been opened, it was hard to go back.

One of the things that made this trip so phenomenal was getting to share it with Stonyfield's co-founder Gary Hirshberg. When it comes to yogurt and organics, he might be the most knowledgable person in the room. He's also incredibly inspiration so getting to hear his story in person left a profound impact on me.

As I'm sure many of you know, we have a very important election coming up next week. There are many hot-button issues from healthcare to women's rights to immigration and while I wish I could dedicate an episode of the show to each, it just wasn't a possibility. But when it comes to the environment, I knew exactly who to ask to join me on the show in discussing the impact of this election on our planet. In addition to co-founding Stonyfield, Gary is also the founder of Just Label It, a coalition of voices in the organics space lobbying government for increased transparency in food labeling. Clearly, he's a busy man so I'm honored and excited to have him on the show today.

Here are a few things we talked about in today's episode:

  • How Gary got started in organics in the 1970s
  • What led Gary to found Stonyfield and how it has evolved
  • The benefits of choosing organic - for the planet and your body
  • What is glyphosate and how is it affecting our bodies and the planet
  • Why organic can absolutely feed the world
  • The lack of government support for organics and why this matters
  • How to vote with your dollar but also with your vote

Perhaps one of the most requested episodes of the podcast has been one focused on Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture in particular. While I have wanted to jump into this topic for a while now, the timing just hasn't been right. I knew I wanted to speak to someone I really trusted and knew would be able to answer my questions in an easy to understand manner and until I got connected to Karinn Gallagher, that wasn't a possibility. Luckily, a few months ago the stars aligned I finally met Karinn in person. I knew immediately we needed her wealth of knowledge on the show.

For anyone who has been curious about TCM, acupuncture, cupping, Chinese herbs and how they can benefit you, this episode is for you! It's also a great conversation on the wellness community in San Francisco and how important those human connections truly are.

Here are a few things we talked about in today's episode:

  • What led Karinn to study TCM
  • What is Traditional Chinese Medicine and which practices are used
  • What is "Qi" and ways you can help balance it
  • The benefits of acupuncture and does it really hurt?
  • Cupping and how it differs from acupuncture
  • What are meridians and using acupressure on them
  • Some of Karinn's favorite herbs and the ones she recommends for different ailments
  • How to use TCM in conjunction with western medicine
  • What advice she would give to her 20 year old self

Social media tends to get a bad rap for a multitude of reasons. One of the biggest ones is that it creates a comparison trap that makes users feel "less than" the people they follow. Yet many of us continue to follow these people even though we know it isn't good for us.

And then there are the people who have made it their mission to make every social media user feel less alone. To be transparent and honest about their struggles and lift the veil on what "reality" online actually looks like. Rini Frey from Own It Babe epitomizes these people. If you aren't following Rini on Instagram, I urge you to do it RIGHT NOW. Her growth this year has been explosive, and for good reason. After battling an eating disorder for many years, she has single-handedly taken on the BS messaging we are fed by social media and digital marketing about what our bodies should look like. She is, quite simply, an inspiration.

For anyone who has or continues to struggle with body image, this episode is for you. For anyone who has or continues to compare their bodies to other people's, this episode is for you. For anyone who wants to end the binge-restrict cycle and learn to embrace who they are with compassion and love, this episode is for you.

Here are a few things we talked about in today's episode:

  • Rini's history with an eating disorder and how it affected her body image
  • How the fitness industry affected her body image
  • Binge eating disorder and what that looked like for her
  • At what point she knew "enough was enough"
  • How she's coped with her body changing as she recovers
  • Shifting identity and the mental struggles of a new way of life
  • How to continue to have a healthy relationship with exercise after an eating disorder
  • Using positive affirmations to build body image
  • What advice she would give to her 20 year old self

I've decided that the theme of season 4 of That's So Maven is "expectation" or more specifically, releasing expectations. I'm not gonna lie, I go into most episodes with some kind of plan in my mind. I invite guests on with some type of expectation that we focus on a particular topic or area of interest. This season has thrown me for a loop. Many of the guests who have come on have completely dispelled my expectations, in the best way possible. This week's guest, Kelsey J Patel is no exception.

I originally invited Kelsey onto the show to chat about reiki, EFT and energy healing. While we definitely jump into these topics, the episode kept coming back to me and some struggles that I've been having. Without me knowing, Kelsey was helping me tap into my energy and some things I need to work on. I'm forever grateful to her for tuning into this and most importantly, reminding me to tune into myself.

Here are a few things we talked about in today's episode:

  • Kelsey's upbringing and what led her to Reiki
  • Back pain and realizing it's more than just a physical issue
  • The importance of talking about mental health struggles
  • The energy of our words and how to reframe them
  • What is reiki and why you don't "do" reiki but "live" reiki
  • EFT and opening up your chakras for healing
  • Why you aren't what you do but who you are
  • Magik Vibes Box and why she created it
  • What advice she would give to her 20 year old self

Mindfulness - what do you know about it? I feel like these days there so much talk about living more mindfully and embracing mindfulness but what does that actually mean? Today I'm chatting with neuroscientist and mindfulness expert, Nkechi Njaka all about this.

I met Nkechi after attending one of her classes and knew immediately that I wanted her on the show. Not only was it one of the most blissful 30 minutes of my week, but I just had this feeling that she was a wealth of knowledge. Glad I went with my gut, because I was right.

You can find Nkechi teaching at a couple studios around San Francisco, including The Pad and The Assembly, but you can also try out some of her mindfulness meditations here. Or just listen to the episode and learn a thing or two. Mindfulness is more than just sitting and meditating. Let's talk about it!

Here are a few things we talked about in today's episode:

  • Her unique name and how she got it
  • Her upbringing and struggles with mental health
  • Landing her dream job and then realizing it wasn't her dream job at all
  • How she took what she learned from that job and launched her own business, NDN Lifestylist
  • What is mindfulness and what are the benefits of it
  • Mindfulness meditation vs. general mindfulness - how to cultivate both
  • Her creative practices and how she starts everyday
  • How to deal with mindfulness in challenging moments
  • What advice she would give to her 20 year old self.
