What do your adrenals, your thyroid and your hormones all have in common? Today on the show Dr. Aviva Romm is chatting about all 3 and how you can take better care of your endocrine system. I discovered Dr. Aviva Romm while navigating my own hormonal challenges and instantly connected with her. Her functional and integrative approach to medicine leaves room for both western approaches and traditional eastern medicine. I'm deeply grateful for your sustainable approach to hormonal health.

Today on the show we're discussing:

  • Aviva's unconventional path to medicine through herbalism
  • Adrenal fatigue and if it really exists (note - the name is misleading!)
  • Thyroid health and how it connects to the adrenals
  • Lifestyle habits that contribute to adrenal and thyroid health
  • Supplements + herbs to support your endocrine system
  • Stress! It's impact, what to do about it + how to say no

100 episodes! I'll be honest, when I set out to create That's So Maven I wasn't thinking beyond the first 10 episodes, let alone 100 but 100 intros + outros, 93 guests, 7 solo episodes and countless incredible discussions later, we've done it! That's so maven has officially entered triple digits.

I've known for a while now what I wanted to discuss on episode 100. This past year has been nothing short of transformational. Yoga teacher training, getting married, creating Camp Wellness have all been monumental, but the mindset shift that's taken place has changed me deeply as a person. For lack of a better description, I've had a spiritual awakening and that's what I'll be discussing today.

For a long time (more than I'd like to admit) I judged people who had experiences like these. The people who suddenly became so enlightened and wielded their crystals around like a gift from the universe. I am certainly not "enlightened" and while I live my crystals as one of the many tools I use to support my mental, emotional and spiritual health, I don't think they're the answer to everything. BUT I have woken up to a new perspective on seeing the world and truly for the first time in my life am letting go of the reigns and putting more trust in the possibility of the universe to deliver exactly what I want and need.

Yes I just typed that.

So like I said, I judged these types of people...hard. And now I am one of those people. So obviously something has shifted and on today's episode - episode 100 no less!- I'm chatting about my spiritual awakening and what's really been going on in my life this past year. From yoga, to journaling, to crystals + spirits, a lot has happened so come along as I share the ride.

What is breathwork? If I got a nickel for every time I answered this question I'd be rich! To be fair, it's usual my fault they're asking the question since more often than not I'm the person who brings it up. But it's true, ever since discovering breathwork a few years ago, I've been obsessed. That doesn't really answer the question "what is breathwork?" now does it? Good thing I have the perfect guest on the show today sharing her knowledge and wisdom of breathwork with you. Kay Ellis is a breathwork and yoga instructor, practicing buddhist and all around incredible human. We met last year and pretty much from the moment we met it was clear we were connected. I'm grateful to call her a guide and a friend.

Some other things we discussed:

  • How Kay discovered breathwork and began teaching it
  • Her connection to Buddhism and her first introduction at 5 years old
  • What is holotropic breathwork + how Kay's practices differ
  • How to practice breathwork at home
  • What is Bhakti yoga + spreading joy through your practice
  • ...and so much more!

Kindness...it seems so simple right? And still many young women (and men) struggle to be kind to themselves and to others every single day. Why is that? Why do we find it so challenging to extend kindness? Today on the show I'm chatting with Molly Thompson and Lauren Paul of Kind Campaign all about kindness, why it's missing and the long-term effects we're seeing from bullying.

We've all had some kind of experience with bullying. Whether it's as the bully or the victim these traumas stay within us until we confront them. But once we do, we regain the power to put an end to hate. This episode is all about overcoming bullying and the importance of raising women up!

Some other things we discussed:

  • How Lauren and Molly started Kind Campaign
  • The long-term impact of bullying
  • How to move forward after bullying
  • What is I was a bully?
  • How to be kinder to yourself and to others
  • ...and so much more!

Episode 91 with Amanda Green of Intuitive Galaxy

Episode 94 with Tiila Abbitt from Aether Beauty

Clean Beauty 5X5 Series

It's been a while since we had any nutrition talk around here! To be honest, a lot of it stems from feeling like I'm in a good place with my body and my diet that sometimes knowing less is actually better for me. That being said, this show isn't just about me and I think it's important to jump into topics that I may not implement but could be helpful to other people. So today Dr. Josh Axe (yes - THE Dr. Axe!) is on the show today talking about the keto diet, intermittent fasting and how to tackle inflammation through diet.

Fair warning: This episode may be triggering to people with a history of an eating disorder or who may be sensitive to diet talk. Weight-loss is mentioned and using diets to lose weight is a topic of conversation. While I do my best to try to keep this space body positive, I also am not here to edit my guests and I think it's important I keep an open mind with every interview, even if I don't necessarily agree. BUT one of the best parts of not agreeing with someone is also seeing how you can maintain respect for one another and meet each other in the middle.

Some other things we discussed:

  • Who should be doing the keto diet?
  • Changes in your diet to help with inflammation
  • Using essential oils to support your overall health
  • Is celery juice all it's cracked up to be?
  • ...and so much more!

It all started with an email. The Liveli team reached out asking if I was interested in trying some of their products and I'll be honest, my initial reaction was to say no. I get pitched daily to try out a new and innovative product and 99.9% of the time I say no. The wellness space can be overwhelming and I don't believe you need a ton of products to feel good in your body. Not to mention the fact that most brands sending products are doing so with some strings attached.

But this email was different. Not only did their story catch my attention, but they weren't asking for anything in return- simply to try, and enjoy and provide them with any feedback I may have for them. No blog posts, or Instagram shares. Just my true and honest feedback. Now there's something I could get down with.

So What Is Liveli?

Liveli is a line of supplements made from biologically active vitamins, minerals, botanicals and precursors that are most proven to elevate the ease of body and mind. They have three lines: Focus Clearli (my fave!), Restore Dayli and Sleep Peacefulli. What I love about Liveli's line is that it's not just vitamins and minerals. They've incorporated herbs and plant medicine that can work in conjunction with vitamins and minerals to make the most effective supplements. And even better, they've formulated it into two pills so you're not taking 234628394 different pills all at once.

For example, Focus Clearli, which helps with focus and concentration is a blend of: Bacopa, Ginseng, B12 and L-tyrosine (among several others)...

Better yet, the story behind Liveli is nothing short of inspiring. Founded by a husband and wife team of MDs after Dr. James Lee was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2010. Dr. James and Dr. Tess began their own supplement routine to help support Dr. James' recovery and improve his brain health. They realized they were onto something and began prescribing a similar routine to their patients and saw incredible results. From their own experience they founded Liveli and the rest is history. After trying out the products for myself and falling in love with them, I reached out to the team asking if Dr. James and Dr. Tess would be willing to come on the show and share their story. I'm thrilled they agreed and today I'm sharing this informative episode all about brain health with you.

We talk a lot on here about how to nourish and move our bodies but what about how we manage our energy? And no, not just how many cups of coffee are your drinking a day...The more I dive deep into the world of yoga and develop more connection to spirituality, the more I have come to understand the value of energy and more specifically, our energetic bodies. How are we caring for ourselves? How are we setting boundaries? How are we nourishing our souls? The questions keep coming up in my own life and I knew it was time to have a candid conversation about it here on the show. Luckily, I knew just the person to have it with and I'm thrilled to welcome Deborah Hanekamp aka Mama Medicine onto the podcast today.

It truly is hard to describe the work that Deborah does (hence why she's on the podcast!) but in essence, she brings 17 years of healing modalities into a specifically curated space for each client. Every session begins with an aura reading and ends with a prescriptive ritual bath. It's not meant to replace conventional or traditional medicine but instead to work with it. Oftentimes helping uncover a deeply seeded trauma that's been hiding in your body. As someone who carries their own trauma that can oftentimes be felt physically and most definitely, emotionally this resonates deeply with me. We're also chatting about sound healing, integrating the shadow and how to turn into your own energetic power. It's a good one!

Clean Beauty 5 x5 video!: http://bit.ly/clean-foundations

If you saw my post on Monday you know that clean beauty/makeup is something that's been on my mind a lot recently. It's been wonderful to see the incredible array of products now available in the clean beauty space, but it's also making it increasingly more confusing. How does one determine what's a quality product from one that isn't? What about sustainability and packaging? That's why I invited the incredible Tiila Abbitt, founder of Aether Beauty on the podcast today to discuss just that: how to make cleaner makeup choices and also support the environment.

Tiila started off her career in beauty working at Sephora in their product innovation group. It's no surprise she learned a ton from this experience which she's now brought to her latest venture, Aether Beauty. Aether is not only a cleaner, more sustainable makeup brand, they're also blurring the lines between makeup and spirituality. As I've begun experiencing a spiritual awakening of sorts (more on this soon), I love anyone who is considering spirituality as they develop new products. This is a great conversation for anyone looking to convert their makeup bag to cleaner products and be more intentional about their makeup choices.

The Art of Gathering...what does this really mean? To be honest, up until a few months ago I didn't think too much about the art of gathering, or if it existed at all. People can simply just come together in a space and enjoy themselves, right? Wrong. While gatherings can certainly happen spontaneously and still be enjoyable, there is much more to a successful and meaningful gathering. And the work that you put in ahead of time certainly is worth it. How do we know this? Thanks to Priya Parker, a conflict-resolution mediator and gatherings consultant.

Priya is also the founder of Thrive Labs, where she helps activists, elected officials, corporate executives, educators, and philanthropists create transformative gatherings. She's the author of The Art of Gathering and is truly transforming the thought and practice that goes into creating meaningful gatherings, something that we do every day of our lives. This episode is applicable to everybody, whether you love to host dinner parties, find yourself in frequent meetings at your office or are deep in the wedding season circuit. There's something for everyone!

Listen to last year's episode with Curt: http://bit.ly/2STXcYC

It's the Valentine's Day episode! Or at least, it's the day before Valentine's Day...you get it! After last year's episode with my husband (then fiancé) Curt Lederle seemed to really resonate with you guys so I asked if he'd come back and join me again this year. Fortunately, I didn't seem to traumatize him too much after last year's episode and he happily said yes. So today's episode is all about what's changed, what hasn't changed and what's coming up next now that we're married.

A few other topics we tackle:

  • Did we know we were meant to be together when we met?
  • How we managed long distance
  • Best advice for supporting your SO when they’re going through job searching and transitioning jobs?
  • Is Curt into health and wellness?
  • What are you two most excited about that’s coming up?

Human Design - Have you heard of it? Up until a few months ago I hadn't either. As a total astrology and personality testing nerd, it's no surprise that as soon as I discovered Human Design, I was obsessed. In some ways I believe that the universe meant for me to discover it because for months I kept having people bring it up with me and ask me what my design is? I knew it was time to dig in full-force when past podcast guest, Kelsey Patel connected me with a Human Design reader. And that's how I met today's podcast guest, Amanda Green from Intuitive Galaxy.

I love when I meet readers and people who follow The Healthy Maven and they're surprised that I'm pretty much the same human in person as I am online. I suck at lying so even if I wanted to live an alternate persona, there's no way anyone would buy it. Of course, I tend to have the same reaction when I meet people in real life. I'm not going to lie, I've been disappointed a few times, but most of the time it's pretty much as expected. And then sometimes you meet someone you follow and they're not only as cool as their online persona, but actually cooler. This, my friends, is Lily Diamond. I had the privilege of meeting Lily a few months ago during our trip with Earthbound Farms. Meeting Lily was like meeting a way cooler version of myself while simultaneously hoping she doesn't think I'm a huge weirdo (I am for the record). She's just one of those people.

I think what I admire most about Lily is how she keeps it real. I've always valued authenticity. Not in the 2019 sense of overexposure and word vomit vulnerability, but in being thoughtful with your words and sharing with intention. So today on the show we're chatting about honesty, Lily's own health and wellness journey and how she's navigated many shifts in her life. It's a good one!

My Skincare Journey: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4 (<- this one has pictures)

Skincare! Probably my favorite topic to discuss. What started out of necessity - I woke up one day with horrible hormonal acne all over my face, chest and back - has turned into a real passion of mine. I never thought I'd see that day when a) I would be acne free and b) I would actually be grateful for my acne for teaching me all about skincare and how to take care of and protect my skin. But I have to give credit where credit is due and my skin would not be what it is without my #1 skincare guru, Katie Woods. Katie is a holistic esthetician and the owner of Ritual Skincare. She gives the most glorious facials and between those answers my millions of questions about skincare. So it was due time she join me on the show!

On today's episode we're chatting all about Katie's journey in skincare, why she decided on holistic skincare and we're getting into her best tips for taking care of your skin. We're also discussing natural hair removal with sugaring and answering YOUR skincare questions. I'm so excited to share Katie's unlimited amounts of skincare wizardry with you today!

This is a topic that is near and dear to my heart and one that I think as women (and men!) we need to be talking about more. I could not have asked for a better or more knowledgable guest to come on the show and share her wisdom. Paige More (better known as Paige Previvor on the 'gram) never meant to become an advocate for breast health. It wasn't until she was diagnosed in her early 20s with the BRCA 1 gene mutation that she even considered the health of her breasts. From there her life flipped upside down.

It started with an Instagram image as she went in for a preventative double mastectomy at age 24. From there she was introduced to a community of women that she never knew existed. Since then she's launched The Breasties and become an advocate for breast education and story-telling around women with the breast cancer gene mutations and breast cancer survivors. She is, without question, a huge inspiration to so many - myself included.

Show notes with Kathryn Budig:

I'm thrilled to welcome Kathryn Budig to the show. Kathryn is an internationally renowned and respected yoga instructor. She also runs a podcast of her own with her wife Kate Fagan (who I also love!). Kathryn is someone who I deeply admire for her introspection, self-compassion and for inspiring me to deepen my yoga practice. But in today's episode we're going beyond just yoga and why no one can be defined by a single thing.

While Kathryn may have started her career as a yoga instructor she is, as we chat about, so much more than this. This episode really spoke to me as I evolve more in my personal and professional life and move through the rocky transition of change. Kathryn is reminding me that change and growth is a positive thing and not to resist the process.
